The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
