The speculation around the recent awards show has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
